Federal Pacific Stab-Lok Panels
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s to the 1980s.
The problem
Testing has shown many Stab-Lok breakers may fail to trip during an overload. A breaker that doesn't trip can let wires overheat.
How to spot one
- "Federal Pacific" or "FPE" on the panel label
- "Stab-Lok" printed inside the door
- Breakers with red or black faces and thin toggles
What to do
Have a licensed electrician evaluate the panel. Replacement is the most common fix.
